Questions

Do you take insurance?

Susan Gilliam Counseling operates as a solo telehealth practice. My current 60-minute psychotherapy rate out of pocket is $200 per session.

If you have a PPO plan and wish to utilize your out-of-network benefits for psychotherapy, I am happy to provide you with a monthly superbill or assist you with automated out-of-network reimbursement platforms to help you get covered.

To remain accessible to individuals who prefer to utilize their in-network insurance benefits, I partner with third-party billing platforms (Alma and Headway). Through these networks, I am able to accept Aetna, Anthem Blue Cross California, Blue Shield of California, Carelon Behavioral Health, Cigna, and Providence Health Plan

Please note: In order to meet insurance billing and audit standards, in-network therapy sessions focus entirely on standard clinical protocols and do not include holistic wellness practices.

Why do some clients choose to opt out of using their insurance?

Choosing whether or not to use insurance is a personal decision, and there is no single right answer. One approach is not inherently superior to the other; it entirely depends on what you need.

Why people choose to private-pay or use out-of-network benefits: The main benefits are more data privacy and the freedom to explore a wider variety of methods for emotional healing. There is less risk of having to justify services to insurance companies, who review records and have a say in the length and type of treatment you can receive.

Why people choose to use their in-network benefits: For many people, navigating the financial aspect of therapy is the top priority, and utilizing standard in-network benefits is the best path forward. Many prefer the direct financial coverage their insurance network provides, and they may be less interested in holistic or art-focused self-care.

I am fully supportive of whichever path aligns best with your lifestyle, financial goals, and preferences.

What are some examples of "complementary holistic practices?"

  • Aromatherapy: Using essential oils or hydrosols to ground the nervous system during moments of overwhelm or panic.

  • Vibroacoustic or Sound Therapy: Utilizing binaural beats or nervous system regulation tools like tuning forks, sound beds, and sound bowls.

  • Somatic Yoga: Breathing techniques or gentle movement to address traumatic stress that is stored in the body.

  • Nature-Based Therapy: Using the outdoors to offset overstimulation and promote nervous system regulation.

  • Therapeutic Art: Grounding activities for self-reflection, skill integration, and self-soothing.
  • Spiritual Reflection: Bibliotherapy, mindfulness, and therapist-led journaling to promote spiritual development.
  • Naturopathic Medicine Referrals: Support with finding doctors who are passionate about helping neurodivergent women address hormonal, nutritional, and metabolic needs relevant to mental health.
I don't live in California, can you still work with me?

I am currently only licensed to provide psychotherapy to individuals located in California at the time of the session.

Do you offer "camera off" therapy?

Yes, I can provide therapy over the phone or videocall.

Where is your office located?

I currently work remotely from my home office in Joshua Tree, California.

Do you offer psilocybin integration therapy to address trauma?

Right now, mainstream clinical training and research on psychedelic integration are still emerging—and it is especially scarce when it comes to the neurodivergent brain. I am currently unable to recommend or prescribe psilocybin as a therapy tool.

However, if you have chosen to use psilocybin for your mental health based on your own research and self-determination, and you want a structured, safe space to gain insights from your experience, I can help. Feel free to reach out for a consultation to see if we’re a good fit.

Are you more of a cat or a dog person?

I love both! I have two 14-year old-dogs that may pop up in our sessions.

Are you going to judge me?

Never! I work with the understanding that you are human and worthy of care, acceptance and self-understanding (which I aim to help facilitate), no matter your experiences.

Do you work from any particular spiritual lens?

I believe that spiritual reflection and spiritual self-care can be an important aspect of many women’s lives, and relevant to mental health.

I do not work from any particular spiritual lens, and I am open to working with clients of all faith backgrounds. If you are not interested in spirituality, it does not have to be a part of your counseling. There is nothing too “out there” or “woo woo” for me, and I am open-minded about my clients’ views.
